Traditions – Love them or hate them, we can’t seem to live without them, especially at Christmas
Did you get yours in the mail yet? The Christmas form letter from your great-aunt in Nipawin, Saskatchewan, I am sure you know who I mean…the aunt that has the miniature dog with a wardrobe more impressive that yours? Mine hasn’t arrived yet but I take comfort in knowing that it is likely in the mail. You know exactly what I am talking about…the holiday traditions we’ve all come to expect. Weather we love them or hate them they are a part of our holidays and it just wouldn’t be the same without them. I had a customer in my store the other day that told me she was a “terrible mother” last year because she didn’t give her 30-something kids the lifesavers storybook they have been getting in their stockings forever. She had tremendous guilt about it and had already made sure she had enough for the next few years in case the lifesavers company suddenly stopped making them. I will admit that I have been guilty of the same…my mom ships me a giant box of butter tarts every year and really it wouldn’t be Christmas if that shoe box didn’t arrive, I would be devastated. Maybe yours is that ancient ornament that you keep in an old plastic tobacco box, wrapped in paper towels and hang on the tree in an incredibly obvious spot so everyone that walks by is forced to do a double take and wonder what that hideous blob is and why it’s hanging there. Maybe it’s your annual glass of really boozy egg nog – I can’t stand the stuff personally but I need to have a few sips once a year just to remind myself that I am not missing out on anything. Maybe it’s the dreaded fruitcake that arrives on the 22nd and leaves in a non-descript box about 321 days later.
Regardless of what “your” vintage memory is, enjoy it. We get to experience it once a year and without it the holidays just aren’t the same. Embrace it, in all of its randomness and appreciate that you only need to endure it once a year.
Remember that this “holiday” season is yours too. Don’t stress over dinner parties, un-purchased gifts, travel plans and weather your light display is bigger than your neighbours. Enjoy the season, make time for friends & family. Eat, drink and be merry. I know as well as the next guy the obligations of the holiday season can be a bit overwhelming so take a deep breath, I can assure you that Martha Stewart will not be inspecting your gift wrap. Have another egg nog if you like it, the season will be over before you know it. Cheers.
Speaking of traditions, mincemeat is one I grew up with. My grandparents LOVED a mincemeat tart and inevitably once or twice a season I would take one from the tray and quickly pop it into my mouth after mistaking it for a butter tart. Wow, that’s a surprise you don’t recover from quickly. This version of “mincemeat” is totally vegetarian, unlike the one I grew up with. In my opinion, it tastes so much better, in fact to me this recipe tastes exactly like Christmas – you’ll know what I mean when you try it. Put it into tart shells, spoon it on a cheese cake or warm it up & serve it with roasted pork. I hope you will love it as much as I do.
